Ukraine has launched a massive counteroffensive in the Russian border region of Kursk, warning Russia that it is “getting what it deserves,” CNN reported.

Andrii Kovalenko, head of the Ukrainian Center for Countering Disinformation, stated that Ukrainian forces have carried out surprise attacks against Russian forces in several locations across Kursk, five months after President Volodymyr Zelensky’s troops breached the border into Russia.

“The Kursk region, good news. Russia is getting what it deserves,” Kovalenko wrote on the social media platform X.

President Zelensky responded to the attacks on Monday, saying that Ukrainian military forces were conducting special operations against Russian targets within Kursk territory.

“The Russians have deployed their strongest units to Kursk, including soldiers from North Korea. What is most important is that this ‘workforce’ cannot be redirected to other fronts — not to Donetsk, nor to Sumy, the Kharkiv region, or Zaporizhzhia,” Zelensky’s statement said.

In an attempt to reclaim the area, Russia has also engaged North Korean soldiers. Zelensky had previously stated that over 38,000 North Korean soldiers have been killed.

Russian authorities claim that their forces have repelled Kyiv’s counteroffensive.
