The United Nations is undergoing financial restructuring as it approaches its 80th anniversary, with efforts to improve efficiency and cut costs. However, officials stress that this initiative should not be equated with U.S. President Donald Trump’s cost-cutting policies.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has launched the “UN80” initiative to modernize the organization amid its seventh consecutive year of liquidity crisis. The financial strain is exacerbated by late or incomplete contributions from member states, including the U.S., which owes $1.5 billion, and China, which has delayed its payments until year-end.

With the UN implementing a 20% reduction in planned expenses and a hiring freeze, concerns over potential layoffs remain unresolved. Officials acknowledge that Trump’s return to office has intensified pressure for financial reforms, with Washington urging the UN to streamline operations.

Despite budget constraints, Guterres emphasizes that UN funding is crucial, stating, “Budgets are not just numbers; they are a matter of life and death for millions worldwide.”
