United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a stark warning following the U.S. airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, calling the move a “dangerous turning point” in an already unstable Middle East.
Speaking at an emergency session of the UN Security Council, Guterres reminded the international community of his recent plea for restraint:
“Just two days ago, in this very chamber, I made a direct appeal: Give peace a chance. That call was ignored.”
Guterres emphasized that the American attack on Iranian nuclear sites “marks a dangerous escalation in a region already reeling from instability and violence.”
He cautioned that the people of the region “cannot endure another cycle of destruction,” warning of the risk of a spiral of retaliation and counter-retaliation.
The UN Secretary-General has been consistently vocal in opposing military escalation in the Middle East, urging all actors to return to diplomacy.
