United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has reacted with deep concern following the United States’ airstrikes against Iran, warning that the use of force by the U.S. represents a dangerous escalation in an already fragile region.
“This is a dangerous escalation in a region that is already fragile and a direct threat to international peace and security,” Guterres stated in a declaration released on Sunday.
He added that there is a growing risk that the conflict could quickly spiral out of control, bringing catastrophic consequences for civilians, the region, and the entire world.
The Secretary-General called for urgent de-escalation and for all parties to respect their international obligations under the UN Charter.
“There is no military solution. The only way forward is diplomacy. The only hope is peace,” Guterres emphasized, urging serious engagement in political solutions to the developing crisis.
