The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has confirmed that the past decade has been the hottest ever recorded.

According to this United Nations agency, the period 2015–2025 represents the 11 hottest years since climate measurements began. The year 2025 ranks as the second or third warmest year in history.

WMO warns that there is very little reason for optimism regarding the state of the global climate. Temperatures are rising, oceans are warming, ice sheets and glaciers are melting, and greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere continue to increase.

WMO Deputy Secretary-General Ko Barrett emphasized that these indicators are not moving in a hopeful direction, while UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that the planet is being “pushed to its limits.”

The global average temperature in 2025 was about 1.43°C above pre-industrial levels, while 2024 was even hotter, at approximately 1.55°C above that baseline.
