A judge affiliated with the United Nations and the High Court of Uganda, Lydia Mugambe, has been sentenced to prison in the United Kingdom after being found guilty of modern slavery offenses.

Mugambe, aged 50, was pursuing her PhD in Law at Oxford University when police discovered that she had been keeping a young woman in her home, forcing her to work unpaid as a housemaid and nanny, the BBC reports.

She was convicted in March and has now been sentenced by Oxford Crown Court to six years and four months in prison. The case has sparked renewed debate about abuse of diplomatic and professional privilege, as well as the exploitation of vulnerable individuals under the guise of domestic arrangements.

Mugambe, known for her previous work in human rights and justice reform in Uganda, now faces international scrutiny and disgrace, with calls for greater accountability within international institutions.
