The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, stated that there is no need for new elections in Ukraine under the supervision of the United Nations, thus rejecting Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposal for a new government in Ukraine, writes Gazeta Sinjali.

“Ukraine has a legitimate government, and this must undoubtedly be respected,” said Guterres when asked about Putin’s proposal.

It is reported that the Russian president has called for Ukraine to be placed under a temporary UN administration until new elections are held, as per AA.

He stated that elections during the war, which are prohibited by law in Ukraine, should be organized to create a government that would negotiate peace.

Meanwhile, Ukraine and its allies fear that Russia might use such elections to install a puppet government loyal to the Kremlin, particularly in areas occupied by Russia.

Putin has reiterated that he believes the mandate of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is invalid.

It is reported that Ukraine has been in a state of war since the beginning of the Russian aggression, which is why both presidential and parliamentary elections have been postponed.

Ukrainians believe that holding elections during wartime would be impractical and unfair, as it would be difficult to ensure that displaced soldiers and civilians could vote.
