The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) will convene an emergency meeting on Monday, January 12, following a formal request by Ukraine, amid escalating Russian attacks.

According to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Kyiv’s request comes in response to recent Russian strikes across Ukraine, including the use of a medium-range ballistic missile known as “Oreshnik”, which was reportedly deployed against the Lviv region, near the border with Poland, a member of both the EU and NATO.

In a statement posted on the platform X, Sybiha said that Russia has openly violated the UN Charter, undermining international security and peace efforts led by the United States, European countries, and other partners.

He called for unity within the UN Security Council to demand:

  • An immediate halt to Russian aggression
  • Protection of civilians
  • Continued support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity

Sybiha also emphasized the need for increased international pressure on Russia, including measures targeting:

  • Russia’s tanker fleet
  • Oil revenues
  • Financial schemes and assets
  • Accountability for violations of international law

Russia has claimed that the Oreshnik missile strike was carried out in retaliation for an alleged Ukrainian drone attack on December 29, 2025, targeting a residence of President Vladimir Putin in the Novgorod (Valdai) region. Moscow stated that this marks the second use of the Oreshnik missile since the start of the war.

Ukraine has categorically denied any attack on Putin’s residence, dismissing the Russian claim as “absurd” and “a hallucination.” Kyiv views the use of the Oreshnik missile as a serious threat to European and global security, particularly due to its deployment near NATO borders.

The UN Security Council meeting, expected to take place at around 8:00 p.m., will focus on Russia’s violations of the UN Charter and the urgent need for international action to stop the aggression.
