Rosemary DiCarlo, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, is currently visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina to participate in the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the genocide against Bosniaks in Srebrenica.
During her visit to Sarajevo on July 10, DiCarlo met with Željko Komšić, a member of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Presidency. Komšić expressed deep gratitude to DiCarlo for her personal commitment and support in the UN General Assembly’s adoption of the resolution last May, which declared July 11 as the International Day of Reflection and Remembrance of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica.
UN Reaffirms Support for Reconciliation
DiCarlo emphasized the UN’s ongoing commitment to support reconciliation and addressing the past, stating that she, her office in Sarajevo, and the broader UN system are ready to assist Bosnia and Herzegovina in overcoming current political challenges.
Numerous international delegations have confirmed their attendance at the 30th anniversary commemoration in Srebrenica, highlighting its global significance.
The Genocide in Srebrenica
In July 1995, Bosnian Serb forces (VRS) murdered approximately 8,000 Bosniak men and boys in Srebrenica and its surrounding areas. The massacre has been classified as genocide by international and domestic courts.
Over 50 individuals have been convicted for genocide and other crimes committed in the Srebrenica region, receiving a total of approximately 700 years of imprisonment.
To date, 6,765 victims have been buried at the Srebrenica-Potočari Memorial Center, while another 250 victims were laid to rest in locations of their families’ choosing.
