The United States has signaled that it is open to dialogue with North Korea without any preconditions, according to reports by Yonhap News Agency, citing sources from the White House.

This stance from Washington comes as Kim Jong-un stated earlier this week that there is no reason for tense relations with the United States if Washington ends what he described as a “hostile policy” toward his country.

Kim made the remarks while closing a multi-day congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea, where he presented political and military objectives for the next five years.

In his speech, the North Korean leader reiterated his rejection of negotiations with South Korea, but left the door open for talks with Washington — on the condition that the United States recognizes North Korea as a nuclear power.

In the past, North Korean officials have rejected U.S. offers focused on denuclearization, stressing that they would only return to talks if Washington drops its demand for the dismantling of Pyongyang’s nuclear program.

Previously, Donald Trump met three times with Kim Jong-un during his first presidential term in an effort to end North Korea’s nuclear program, but the summits did not produce a final agreement.
