Peter Due, head of United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo, told the United Nations Security Council that those responsible for the attacks in Banjska and Ibër-Lepenc must be brought to justice.

Presenting his six-month report, he emphasized that the UN is ready to cooperate with both Belgrade and Pristina to ensure accountability. He also assessed Kosovo’s December elections positively, while noting that political momentum has been challenged by delays in electing a new president.

Due expressed hope that political differences will be overcome to avoid new elections and keep institutions focused on citizens’ needs. He welcomed the return of Serb-majority mayors in northern Kosovo as an important step toward institutional re-engagement, though he noted ongoing challenges such as administrative gaps and language barriers.

He stressed the importance of continued dialogue between central and local authorities and called for progress in implementing agreements, including the establishment of the Association of Serb-majority municipalities. He also highlighted the need to protect media independence and fully implement language laws, including appointing a Commissioner for Languages.
