The head of the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), Peter Due, met with Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Đurić and Petar Petković, director of Serbia’s Office for Kosovo, in Belgrade ahead of the United Nations Security Council session on Kosovo scheduled for October.
According to an UNMIK statement, the discussions focused on recent developments, the importance of dialogue and the mission’s ongoing work in Kosovo, including efforts to build confidence among all communities.
“On the eve of the UN Security Council session on Kosovo, scheduled for October, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG), Peter Due, visited Belgrade,” UNMIK said.
During the visit, Due met with Marko Đurić, Petar Petković and representatives of the diplomatic community to exchange views on recent developments and the role of dialogue.
However, the UNMIK statement referred to Serbia’s Office for Kosovo using the abbreviation “OKiM,” corresponding to the Serbian-language name “Kosovo i Metohija.”
The terminology has political significance because Kosovo institutions and authorities generally use “Kosovo,” while “Kosovo and Metohija” is the official terminology used by Serbian institutions in reference to the territory.
UNMIK said Due also discussed the mission’s continued efforts to promote confidence-building between Kosovo’s communities.
The upcoming UN Security Council session is expected to address developments in Kosovo and the work of UNMIK as part of the Council’s regular consideration of the situation.
