President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced during her speech at the European Political Community Summit in Tirana that work is underway on a new set of sanctions against Russia, reports Rks News.

“We are here, and history has come full circle. So has geopolitics. The war is driven by Putin’s ambitions. The call for Europe’s action has been voiced a hundred times. Today, Europe is awake. We must move forward. We have all learned that when there are major crises, Europe is the one to provide major responses,” said von der Leyen.

She emphasized Europe’s unity in supporting Ukraine and the important role sanctions are playing in increasing pressure on Moscow.

“We are ready to do more to bring Putin to the negotiating table. We want peace. That’s why we are working on the next package of sanctions,” she added.

Von der Leyen also highlighted the importance of European unity and a common future, concluding with the words: “Long live Europe.”
