At the Bled Strategic Forum, U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew G. Whitaker underlined Washington’s close monitoring of developments in Serbia and the Republika Srpska entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, stressing that the United States remains committed to preventing any escalation that could destabilize the region.

“We are following very carefully everything happening both in Republika Srpska and in Serbia. Our focus is to ensure the situation does not turn into a potential regional conflict,” Whitaker stated.

He emphasized that the U.S. seeks stability in the Western Balkans, noting that this is equally important for NATO’s European partners, who, he said, “have a duty to act together in times of crisis.”

The comments come at a time when Serbia has been rocked for months by anti-government protests, some of which have escalated into violence. President Aleksandar Vučić, without offering evidence, has accused foreign actors of attempting to fuel revolution inside the country.

Whitaker’s remarks reaffirm the transatlantic consensus that peace and security in the Western Balkans remain a strategic priority for both Washington and Brussels.
