US Ambassador to Ukraine, Bridget Brink, has resigned due to disagreements with the White House’s policy, according to the Financial Times (FT), citing well-informed sources.
Brink, who was appointed as Ambassador in May 2022 during the Biden administration, faced increasing pressure from high-ranking officials in the Trump administration, who questioned her willingness to support their strategy on Ukraine.
Sources state that Brink’s resignation also stemmed from deteriorating working relations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, although this was not the main reason for her departure.
Brink’s resignation came as she faced growing criticism from the Trump administration regarding her stance on Ukraine. The former President’s officials questioned her alignment with their approach to the conflict.
Return to the US
State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce confirmed that Brink would conclude her diplomatic mission in Kyiv and return to the United States.
“She has been there as Ambassador for three years, which is a long time in a combat zone,” Bruce noted.
Brink was appointed as Ambassador in May 2022 under former US President Joe Biden’s administration.
Sources suggest that Chris Smith, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Eastern Europe, is being considered as the new US Ambassador to Ukraine. Smith previously served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Kyiv from 2022 to 2023.
