A potential mass casualty event was averted Sunday morning at CrossPointe Community Church after a 31-year-old armed man opened fire outside, only to be stopped by security staff and a brave citizen. Over 150 worshippers were inside attending a regular service when the incident occurred, police announced.
Around 11:00 AM, the assailant, clad in a tactical vest and armed with a rifle and a pistol, approached the church and began shooting, injuring one person in the leg. A quick-thinking parishioner immediately responded by striking the attacker with his vehicle, while two members of the security staff then shot the gunman, causing fatal injuries.
The injured individual was taken to the hospital and is out of danger. There were no other casualties. Authorities reported that the armed person had no known connection to the church and is suspected of experiencing a serious mental health crisis.
Wayne Police Chief Ryan Strong praised the heroic actions of the staff and the citizen who prevented a potential tragedy. The motive behind the attack remains unclear.
