The United States and Russia agreed on Tuesday to address the “irritants” in their bilateral relations and have begun efforts to bring an end to the war in Ukraine, the US Department of State said, clarifying that the efforts are still in the early stages.

“A phone call, followed by a meeting, is not enough for sustainable peace,” said State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce, following the meeting held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, which lasted more than four hours.

Among other things, she stated that the parties would engage high-level teams to end the war as soon as possible, “in a way that is sustainable and acceptable to both sides.”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who led the delegation, stated that the parties also agreed to restore embassy staff and, in addition to peace discussions concerning Ukraine, the negotiating teams would promote economic cooperation.
