The US Chargé d’Affaires in Kosovo, Anu Pratipati, has stressed the importance of active participation of Kosovo Serbs in the country’s institutional and political life.

In an interview with Serbian-language media, Pratipati underlined: “When you are not at the table, others make decisions for you,” urging the Serb community in Kosovo to take greater responsibility in building a stable and prosperous Kosovo.

This marks the first high-level statement from the US Embassy since Ambassador Geoffrey Hovenier’s departure nearly a year ago. Pratipati confirmed that while the appointment of a new ambassador may take time, US engagement in Kosovo remains unwavering.

“The US has proudly supported Kosovo’s path towards becoming a sovereign, democratic, multiethnic, and prosperous state. But we are concerned about the actions of the interim government that have increased tensions, especially in relation to the Serb community,” she said.

Pratipati reminded that Kosovo’s government, led by caretaker Prime Minister Albin Kurti, is responsible for the security and well-being of all citizens without exception.

On the issue of Serbian parallel institutions in education and healthcare, she was clear:
“They must be integrated into Kosovo’s system. We understand the sensitivity around health and education for the Serb community, but closures without coordination are not the solution.”
