The US Embassy in Kosovo has raised concerns over the failure to constitute the Assembly, warning that the ongoing deadlock is delaying Kosovo’s aspirations and putting the integrity of its institutions at risk.

In a statement, the Embassy urged political leaders to work together to reach an agreement to form the Assembly.

“This ongoing blockage is delaying progress on Kosovo’s future aspirations and jeopardizing the integrity of the institutions that the people of Kosovo fought so hard to build,” the Embassy said in a response to Koha.

“We call on political leaders to take their responsibilities seriously and work together to reach an agreement to constitute the Assembly, which includes the election of a Speaker and Deputy Speakers,” the statement continued.

The Embassy emphasized that Kosovo’s leaders must use the coming weeks to find a way forward that ensures stable governance in line with the Constitution.

“Leaders should not rely on the Constitutional Court to fix a political deadlock that only they can resolve. The people of Kosovo expect their leaders to fulfill their commitment to work in the best interest of the country,” a US Embassy spokesperson added.

The US Embassy also reaffirmed its commitment to work with Kosovo’s next government to advance regional stability, security, and prosperity.

So far, 54 attempts to constitute the Assembly have failed. A temporary measure by the Constitutional Court, in effect since Sunday, bars MPs from making decisions or taking actions beyond the 30-day constitutional deadline, which expired based on the Court’s ruling on June 26.

The restriction will remain in place from July 27 to August 8.
