British Foreign Secretary David Lammy and US Senator JD Vance will host a meeting on Saturday with national security advisors from Europe and the US to discuss Russia’s war in Ukraine, the office of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced.
Ahead of the security meeting, Prime Minister Starmer spoke by phone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the statement said.
The meeting is described as “an important forum to discuss progress toward securing a just and lasting peace,” according to the announcement reported by RFE/RL.
“Both leaders welcomed President Trump’s desire to end this barbaric war and agreed on the need to continue exerting pressure on Putin to end his illegal war,” the statement added.
“The Prime Minister closed the call by reiterating his unwavering support for Ukraine and its people.”
This gathering comes a day after the official confirmation of the August 15 summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
The aim of the Trump–Putin meeting is to bring an end to Russia’s nearly four-year war in Ukraine.
So far, there has been no mention of Ukraine’s participation in the August 15 summit, despite Kiev and European countries insisting that the war-torn country must be part of the negotiations.
However, Ukraine’s national security advisor will attend Saturday’s meeting alongside his European and American counterparts, Starmer’s office said.
Vance, currently in the UK for vacation, began his visit on Friday with a meeting with Lammy at the British government residence southeast of London.
