A wave of snow, ice, high winds, and falling temperatures created hazardous conditions in parts of the central United States on Sunday, as a winter storm is expected to bring the possibility of “the heaviest snowfall in a decade” to several areas.

Snow and ice covered major roads in nearly all of Kansas, western Nebraska, and parts of Indiana, where the National Guard was activated to assist travelers stranded in their vehicles.

At least 20 cm of snow was expected, as the National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings for the states of Kansas and Missouri.

The warning was extended to New Jersey for Monday and into the early hours of Tuesday.
