Leaders from Europe and the Middle East have welcomed a new United States plan for Gaza, as President Donald Trump urged Hamas to accept the proposal.

The plan, agreed upon by Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, calls for an immediate end to military operations and the release of 20 Israeli hostages and the remains of dozens more held by Hamas within 72 hours, in exchange for the freedom of hundreds of Gaza residents imprisoned by Israel, according to BBC reports.

A Palestinian source involved in the ceasefire talks confirmed that Hamas officials received the 20-point White House plan.

The proposal specifies that Hamas would not participate in governing Gaza, while leaving the door open for the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Speaking at a press conference following meetings with Netanyahu at the White House, Trump described the plan as “a historic day for peace.”
