The United States is set to reinforce its military presence in Southeast Europe, unveiling a five-year contract for construction and maintenance projects in Albania, Kosovo, and Bulgaria. The initiative, led by the US Army Corps of Engineers, is designed to provide advanced infrastructure for American troops and regional allies, highlighting Washington’s long-term strategic and geopolitical commitment.

Expanded Presence in the Balkans

According to an official announcement, the agreement will include major construction and maintenance works at bases where US forces are stationed. The plan aims not only to strengthen American troop presence but also to support other US agency operations in the region, particularly in the Republic of Kosovo.

The Kosovo Ministry of Defense welcomed the initiative as a vital step toward regional security.

“We welcome every investment or increase of American forces in Kosovo. The US is our strategic partner. Not only would investments in military infrastructure in Southeast Europe enhance our security, but the establishment of a permanent base in Kosovo would contribute to the stability of the entire Western Balkans,” said Liridona Gashi, spokesperson of the Ministry of Defense, for RTK.

Clear Signal of Commitment

Analysts view the move as a strong reaffirmation of Washington’s military commitment to the Balkans.

“This is extraordinary news, especially given earlier concerns about a possible US withdrawal or reduced attention to Kosovo. Today, the US confirms that its deployment here is crucial for geostrategic reasons and in response to the continued threat from Russia in this part of Europe,” said Arben Fetoshi, director of the Octopus Institute.

Former senior officials of the Kosovo Security Force (KSF) echoed the sentiment, stressing that a robust US presence remains a key deterrent to Russian influence in the Western Balkans.

“Kosovo’s geographical position is of high geostrategic interest to both the US and NATO. Preventing Russian influence is vital for Washington and Brussels. We are fortunate that our position aligns with America’s strategic priorities—this is why Kosovo is considered a priority in terms of strengthening military capabilities,” stated Kadri Kastrati, former KSF commander.

Toward a Safer Future

Both Fetoshi and Kastrati emphasized that the US role in Southeast Europe is fundamental for building a safer, more stable future for the entire Balkans.
