The United States has pledged to defend “every centimeter of NATO territory” following a Russian drone incursion over Poland, marking the first known case of a NATO country intercepting Russian drones during the full-scale war in Ukraine.
US Statement at the UN
At the United Nations Security Council, Acting U.S. Ambassador Dorothy Shea stated:
“The United States stands with our NATO allies against these alarming airspace violations.”
Her remarks aimed to reassure allies after President Donald Trump faced criticism for suggesting the incident “might have been a mistake.”
Shea emphasized that Russia has escalated its bombing campaign in Ukraine since Trump’s meeting with President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15.
“These actions, now including the violation of a U.S. ally’s airspace—intentional or not—demonstrate a significant lack of respect for U.S. good-faith efforts to end this conflict,” Shea said.
Poland Confirms Drone Interception
Poland confirmed that Russian drones were shot down over its territory with the support of NATO aircraft, describing the incident as a deliberate violation of its sovereignty.
Polish Foreign Secretary Marcin Bosacki said during the UN session:
“We know, and I repeat, we know this was not a mistake.”
He presented photos of the wreckage and Russian markings on the drone, asserting:
“Poland will not be intimidated.”
