Protests have rapidly spread from Los Angeles to New York and several cities in Texas, with reports of mass arrests occurring as authorities attempt to control unrest. While demonstrations in New York have been largely peaceful, numerous arrests have been made.
The National Guard has been deployed in Texas, and protests are now active in at least 10 cities across the United States. These include major hubs such as Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, Austin, and San Francisco.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott confirmed the deployment of the National Guard in his state, as reported by BBC. “The Texas National Guard will be deployed to various locations throughout the state to ensure peace and order,” Abbott stated. “Peaceful protest is legal. Harming a person or property is illegal and will result in arrest. The Texas Guard will use all means and strategies to assist law enforcement.”
In Los Angeles, a BBC reporter described police moving through downtown, firing barrages of rubber bullets. The reporter noted that an officer warned he could also be arrested, despite being a member of the media permitted to operate freely in a curfew zone.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) confirmed on X that with the curfew in effect in parts of the city, “mass arrests are being initiated.” The LAPD further stated: “Multiple groups continue to gather on 1st St between Spring and Alameda. These groups are being addressed and mass arrests are being initiated. Curfew is in effect.”
