The U.S. Senate began voting Monday on a massive spending plan, dubbed the “big and beautiful bill,” following several weeks of intense negotiations.
Republicans, who control both chambers of Congress, were divided over the extent to which social welfare programs should be cut to extend tax relief. President Donald Trump has expressed his desire for Congress to approve the bill by July 4.
After the House of Representatives passed its version of the bill by a single vote last month, the legislation moved to the Senate. Due to changes made by the Senate, the bill will now return to the House for another vote.
