The United States Embassy in Kosovo has confirmed that it will continue supporting the Kosovo Security Force (KSF) with American military equipment, while also promoting US businesses and trade ties between the US and Kosovo, reports Radio Free Europe.
According to the embassy spokesperson, the strong military cooperation between the US and Kosovo is helping the KSF achieve self-sufficiency and position Kosovo as a key contributor to regional and global stability.
“The United States fully supports the 10-year transition of the Kosovo Security Force into a multi-ethnic, professional, NATO-interoperable territorial defense force capable of enhancing regional security and promoting US security interests,” the spokesperson said.
KSF’s Transition to a Full-Fledged Army
The KSF began this 10-year transition in 2018, following the adoption of relevant laws by the Kosovo Assembly, paving the way for its transformation into a fully capable army. The US has described this transition as historic, supporting the professional development of the force. NATO, however, had previously considered the move “inopportune” due to the tense relations between Kosovo and Serbia.
Officials from Kosovo’s Ministry of Defense have confirmed that the transition is expected to be completed by 2028, with enhancements to air capabilities, combat regiments, and a reserve component of 3,000 personnel, after reaching the target of 5,000 active troops.
Equipment Provided by the US
In recent years, the KSF has received or purchased various US-made military equipment, including:
- RQ-20 Puma drones
- Javelin missiles
- Humvee vehicles
Future International Role
The KSF is also preparing to join the International Stabilization Force in Gaza, part of a peace plan for the region proposed by US President Donald Trump.
This process represents a significant step toward modernizing and professionalizing the KSF, strengthening its role as a key force for regional stability and international cooperation.
