The United States is preparing to gradually phase out security assistance programs for European militaries along the border with Russia, reports the Financial Times.

Pentagon officials informed European diplomats last week that Washington will no longer fund programs that train and equip Eastern European armed forces, which would be on the front line in any potential conflict with Russia. Funding for these programs will end in September 2026, and the administration has not requested additional funds from Congress.

A White House official explained that the move is part of President Donald Trump’s efforts to “reassess and reorient” foreign aid, in line with an executive order issued at the start of his term.

Countries most likely affected by the funding cuts include Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania.
