On the 26th anniversary of Liberation Day, Vaughan Smith, a distinguished British journalist and cameraman, was today declared an “Honorary Citizen” of Skënderaj by Mayor Fadil Nura.

Mayor Nura expressed that this honor is bestowed upon individuals who have left a significant mark on collective memory through their contributions. “Today is a special day for our city. We have gathered not only for an award but to remember and honor two people who have left an indelible mark on our collective memory. For people who, without any compensation, have done extraordinary work. It is an honor that, alongside many figures who have contributed greatly to the national cause, today we have two new citizens, Vaughan Smith and Benito Mares.”

Addressing Smith, Mayor Nura added, “Mr. Smith, through your footage, the world saw the crime that was happening here and saw a part of our history.”

Smith’s Pivotal Role in Documenting Kosovo’s Struggle

The “Honorary Citizen” title was awarded to British video-journalist Vaughan Smith as a sign of respect and gratitude for his contribution in portraying the reality and raising international awareness about the Albanian people’s struggle for freedom and independence in Kosovo. His work includes:

  • Documenting the KLA Epic in Prekaz on March 5, 6, and 7, 1998.
  • Filming the Abri Massacre.
  • Recording an interview with hero Fehmi Lladrovci.
  • Filming British paratroopers during NATO’s intervention in Kosovo.
  • Directing the renowned film about the Kosovo War, “The Valley,” which remains one of the most acclaimed documentaries on the conflict.

“I was privileged to witness what happened here; what I saw left indelible marks on my memory,” said Smith on June 18, 2025. “The people here have shown incredible levels of courage and sacrifice for this country. The sacrifice of the Jashari family in Prekaz was not only tragic but also transformative. When I come and see you, I also see Adem Jashari in your spirit and the nation you have built with sacrifices.

During the ceremony, a segment of an interview Smith gave to ‘Kallxo Përnime’ regarding his reporting from Kosovo was also broadcast.

The title of “Honorary Citizen” was also awarded to Benito Mares for his contribution to raising public awareness about events in Kosovo, and as the initiator and financier of the KLA martyrs’ complex in Marinë, promoting the values of this army.
