Vice President JD Vance outlined his conservative views on foreign policy during the annual meeting of the Conservative Political Action Conference, attended by foreign politicians who express support for President Donald Trump’s agenda. According to Voice of America’s correspondent, the conference once again highlighted the divergence in views regarding the U.S.-EU alliance.
Vice President JD Vance warned Europe:
“Of course, we will continue to have important alliances with Europe. But how strong those alliances will be depends on whether we lead our societies in the right direction,” said the Vice President.
Vance spoke on Thursday at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference. This year’s event attracted right-wing European leaders from Argentina, the United Kingdom, Poland, Hungary, and Italy.
Analysts say they are witnessing, in real-time, the process of the disintegration of one of the United States’ most important alliances.
“I think we should take very seriously what is happening at this annual conference. We are witnessing a separation of the United States from our traditional allies in Europe, from NATO. This is an 80-year partnership that now seems to be fracturing. I think this is a concern for Americans and for Europe,” said Jim Kessler of the “Third Way” Institute.
However, not all Europeans disagree with President Trump’s administration.
“End the war. President Trump is right. Just as our prime minister has stated, this war should end because it leads us nowhere. It’s madness. Hundreds of thousands of people are dying,” said Balázs Orbán, political director of the Hungarian Prime Minister’s office.
Diana Iovanovici Șoșoacă, a Member of the European Parliament leading a far-right party in Romania, told Voice of America that the Trump administration had invited her. She said it was her first time attending the Conservative Political Action Conference. She spoke about her shared views with President Trump, positions that, according to her, led to the Romanian Constitutional Court’s decision to ban her participation in the 2024 presidential race.
“Because I have positions against the European Union, NATO, against the promotion of war, or similar issues. Because of my statements about freedom, because I was against the Covid-19 vaccine and against masks, I was the voice of Romania, just as you are the Voice of America, and this was considered an unconstitutional opinion, which is why I was not allowed to run,” said Șoșoacă.
The Conservative Political Action Conference has had a significant influence on Trump’s rise at the forefront of conservative politics. Trump addressed this conference during his first term; at this year’s annual meeting, he is expected to deliver his speech on Saturday.
