An army of dragonflies turned a Rhode Island, USA beach vacationer’s weekend into a literal biblical plague.

The flock of dragonflies headed to Misquamicut Beach on Saturday and “invaded” the beach, went under umbrellas and sunbeds and didn’t even spare the people. Holidaymakers tried to defend themselves while others ran as fast as they could to their cars.

Some stood and laughed at the sight, while the children screamed and tried to shoo away the insects with beach toys.

Swarms of dragonflies form when they are in their summer breeding season or when the small insects they feed on are forced to change their habitat due to weather or human activity.

Flocks can contain up to millions of dragonflies, and groups can be so large that they can even be detected by radar.

Dragonflies feed on mosquitoes and other insects, but they may also eat small birds such as hummingbirds.
