European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen urged the EU to deepen ties with China and strengthen its relationship with India while pursuing a pragmatic approach toward the Trump administration in the US, reports RFE.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum, Von der Leyen emphasized the importance of engaging with the new US administration, which has signaled protectionist policies, including punitive tariffs on key trading partners.

“Our priority will be early engagement, discussing shared interests, and a readiness to negotiate,” she said. “We will be pragmatic but always stand firm on our principles,” she added, reiterating Europe’s commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement despite the US withdrawal under Trump.

Focus on China and India

Von der Leyen also highlighted the need for constructive engagement with China, marking 2025 as the 50th anniversary of EU-China diplomatic relations.
“This milestone offers an opportunity to deepen our relationship with China and expand trade and investment ties where possible,” she stated.

Additionally, she announced plans for her core team to visit India, aiming to enhance the strategic partnership with the world’s largest democracy. “Together with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we aim to strengthen this vital partnership,” she said.

Balancing Trade Tensions

While the EU is prepared to defend its interests if Trump enforces trade threats, Von der Leyen stressed the importance of maintaining global economic ties. “No one benefits from disrupting the global economy,” she said.

The EU has diversified its trade partnerships, recently announcing a significant trade deal with Mexico and resuming talks for a free trade agreement with Malaysia.
