European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that while transatlantic cooperation remains crucial for prosperity, security, and peace, the EU is prepared to defend its interests if the new Trump administration adopts unfair trade policies, particularly regarding tariffs.

“We want a stronger transatlantic partnership, not only because of our historical ties but because it is the smart approach,” von der Leyen said during a joint press conference with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. “At the same time, if necessary, we are ready to protect our interests.”

Potential U.S. Tariffs Raise Concerns

Von der Leyen emphasized the mutual benefits of EU-U.S. economic cooperation but warned that Brussels would only react once Washington implements actual trade measures.

“We believe in strengthening business cooperation because tariffs increase costs, harm workers, and burden consumers with higher prices. This creates economic instability and affects both sides,” she stated.

EU Calls for Dialogue but Warns of Firm Response

The European Commission president urged the U.S. to seek joint solutions with the EU, rather than imposing trade restrictions unilaterally.

“We are confident that we can find common ground. However, if unfair measures emerge, the EU is ready to respond decisively. We will stand firm on our principles,” von der Leyen asserted.

The remarks came as EU commissioners met with the Polish government in Gdansk for a two-day summit to discuss key priorities for Poland’s EU Council presidency, under the slogan: “Security, Europe.”
