European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that she emphasized to a bipartisan delegation from the U.S. Congress “the need to respect without question” the sovereignty of Greenland and Denmark during a meeting on Monday as part of the World Economic Forum in Switzerland.
According to her, respecting sovereignty is essential for transatlantic relations between the European Union and the United States. “This is of great importance for our transatlantic relationship,” von der Leyen stressed.
She added that despite differences, the EU remains ready to continue close cooperation with the U.S., NATO, and other allies, in full coordination with Denmark, to advance shared security interests.
The statement comes amid rising tensions regarding the Arctic and Greenland’s strategic role, placing the issue of sovereignty at the center of international discussions.
