The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, speaking at the European Political Community Summit held in Tirana, said that European leaders have gathered to shape the shared future of the continent, as reported by Rks News.
She compared the current moment in Europe to the historic fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990, warning of a resurgence in geopolitical tensions.
“We know that the changes we are experiencing are historic. When the wall fell in 1990, it was declared the end of history, and we believed that political and economic freedom would finally merge and unite people. Today, history is repeating itself. Geopolitics has returned. What we once perceived as a world order is now becoming a world disorder driven by Putin’s imperial ambitions and other global battles,” she stated.
Von der Leyen said that Europe has reflected on these developments and is aware of the new challenges, stressing the need for cooperation and for building broader global partnerships.
“Today, Europe is awake, eyes wide open. But we must expand our network of partnerships across the globe. We are gathered in Tirana to build our common future — our European future in an era of shared prosperity,” concluded the European Commission President.
