European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has reacted to warnings by U.S. President Donald Trump about imposing a 10% tariff on several European countries including the UK, Germany, and France following their opposition to Trump’s stance on Greenland.

Von der Leyen said that for Europe, territorial integrity and sovereignty are fundamental, stressing that the EU stands in full solidarity with Denmark and Greenland. She warned that such tariffs would damage transatlantic relations and could trigger a dangerous spiral of escalation.

Statement:

“Territorial integrity and sovereignty are fundamental principles of international law.
They are essential for Europe and for the international community as a whole.

We have consistently underlined our shared transatlantic interest in peace and security in the Arctic, including through NATO.

The Danish exercise, coordinated in advance and conducted with allies, responds to the need to strengthen security in the Arctic and poses no threat to anyone.

The EU stands in full solidarity with Denmark and the people of Greenland. Dialogue remains essential, and we are committed to building on the process that began last week between the Kingdom of Denmark and the United States.

Tariffs would harm transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous spiral of escalation. Europe will remain united, coordinated, and committed to defending its sovereignty.”
