European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and U.S. President Donald Trump have agreed to hold a meeting, though a date has yet to be set, according to European sources.

“During a brief conversation, President von der Leyen and President Trump agreed to meet,” said European Commission spokesperson Paula Pinho, without providing further details.

The announcement comes amid high tensions in transatlantic relations, as the European Union and the U.S. are currently negotiating the removal of tariffs imposed by President Trump.

Additional American tariffs of 25% on cars, aluminum, and steel are already in effect, alongside a 10% tariff on all other goods.

European Commissioner for the Economy Valdis Dombrovskis, after talks in Washington, said that there is still “a lot of work to do” before a deal can be reached. He noted that the lack of clarity from the U.S. side makes negotiations particularly challenging.

President Trump has repeatedly shown preference for meeting with individual leaders of EU member states rather than engaging with the EU as a bloc.
