In a speech at the Munich Security Conference, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen criticized the new foreign policy approach of Trump.
Von der Leyen stated that Europe has the potential to “move mountains” when adopting a “sense of urgency.”
The President of the European Commission issued a stern warning to Washington, emphasizing that failure in Ukraine would have serious consequences not only for European security but also for American security.
“A failed Ukraine would weaken Europe, but it would also weaken the United States,” von der Leyen warned.
Despite differing opinions, both the EU and the US agree that Ukraine will need “strong security guarantees.”
“Ukraine needs peace through strength, Europe wants peace through strength, and as President Trump has made clear: the United States is strongly committed to this doctrine,” von der Leyen added.
In her speech, the President of the European Commission highlighted the EU’s commitment to supporting Ukraine, responding to President Trump’s accusations that Europe had not contributed enough.
She emphasized that the financial and military support from the EU to Ukraine amounts to 134 billion euros, making it the largest contribution compared to any other actor.
Regarding the threat of a transatlantic trade war, von der Leyen criticized the US’s tariff policies, stating that “trade wars and punitive tariffs make no sense.” This statement drew applause from the audience, reports euronews.al.
She also told the summit that the future of Ukraine is “here in Europe” and that officials are working on the process of the country’s EU membership.
