In her speech at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, emphasized the European Union’s commitment to ensuring a future of peace, progress, and prosperity for the Western Balkans, Ukraine, and Moldova.

She highlighted Russia’s efforts to hinder their European future but reassured that Europe’s commitment to these countries would remain stronger. Von der Leyen reaffirmed that the EU would support these nations at every step based on merit, until they are ready to join the Union, and praised Marta Kos, the future EU Commissioner for Enlargement, as the right person to oversee this process.

Von der Leyen reiterated the vision of a continent united by democracy, the rule of law, and respect for fundamental freedoms, stressing that the EU’s freedom and sovereignty are more than ever dependent on its economic power.

She further stated, “The fight for freedom is not only for the 27 member states,” but for the entire continent, extending to the Western Balkans, Ukraine, Moldova, and beyond. She acknowledged the resilience of Ukraine and Moldova, and the commitment of the Western Balkans to reforms, growth, and EU accession. However, she warned that Russia would stop at nothing to prevent these countries from having a European future, but Europe’s dedication will always be stronger.

Von der Leyen also outlined the EU’s first major initiative focusing on competitiveness to bridge the gap with the United States and China, while promising a plan for decarbonization and enhancing European competitiveness.

On European defense, she stressed the need for higher defense spending, especially in light of the ongoing war in Ukraine and concerns over US commitment with the potential return of Donald Trump to the White House.

With a focus on global conflicts, von der Leyen stated, “Europe must play a bigger role” and emphasized that “there is no time to waste.”

The European Parliament is set to vote today at 12:00 on the new composition of the European Commission.
