In a recent media conference, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić shared a fascinating tidbit from history, claiming he is preventing a 1985 plan that would have diverted the Ibër River, essentially draining Ujman Lake. This rather bold statement came in the wake of the explosion that damaged the Ibër-Lepenc water canal in Zubin Potok last Friday.
According to Vučić, the 1985 plan proposed by SrbijaVode (Serbia’s public water company) was all about changing the course of the Ibër River a decision that would have left Kosovo’s Gazivode Lake dry, followed by a pretty catastrophic outcome: no more lakes. Clearly, Vučić is convinced this was an idea he and apparently only he could have prevented.
“I’ve always been against it,” Vučić said, adding that he “never” wanted to use nature as a political tool and just to be clear, he’s not all about destroying things like that. “We gave electricity to Kosovo instead,” he added. How generous. According to him, it was all about sensible decisions, and the idea of blowing up a lake for political purposes was just well, absurd.
Moreover, he reassured everyone that if any Serbs were involved in the attack on the water canal, they would immediately be “arrested and prosecuted”. Ah yes, we can just imagine that happening just like they arrested and prosecuted Milan Radojicic and his “other terrorist friends”, that were involved in the Banjska Attack! Never mind, those guys are still enjoying their freedom, just as expected. He added, however, that “this won’t happen,” implying that, naturally, no such thing could possibly occur on his watch. And he’s adamant he doesn’t need “terrorism” to make decisions, just a simple administrative decision and “two months of work.
