The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, stated today that Syria’s recognition of Kosovo was an expected development, accusing Turkey of exerting significant influence over the Arab country.

“The expected news was Syria’s recognition. It was clear how important Asad’s independent approach was while in power, and it is also clear that when someone comes under the significant influence of a key regional country like Turkey, it is not surprising that this recognition was expected,” Vučić explained, speaking at the UNESCO General Conference in Samarkand.

He noted that the same pattern was observed in Riyadh and Antalya, pointing out that decisions regarding Kosovo’s recognition are often guided by Serbia’s regional allies.

“In Syria, everything was predictable – they receive orders and act accordingly. It is difficult to maintain independent decision-making as it was in the past,” Vučić added.

He also emphasized that Serbia will continue its “fight to preserve its internationally recognized borders” and that confronting foreign influence requires patience and long-term diplomatic strategy.

Vučić reported on meetings he held on the sidelines of the 43rd UNESCO General Conference, including with leaders from Uzbekistan and Slovakia, highlighting the importance of advancing bilateral relations and Serbia’s European path.

He announced that the President of Slovakia is expected to visit Serbia by the end of this year, providing an opportunity to further strengthen cooperation.
