Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has openly celebrated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s recent statements on Kosovo, claiming that Prishtina has suffered its biggest political setback in more than a decade.
Speaking to reporters, Vučić said the reaction in Prishtina to Zelensky’s position had been unusually strong, portraying the Ukrainian president’s visit to Belgrade as a major diplomatic gain for Serbia.
“Prishtina has reacted more strongly than ever before to Zelensky. A comprehensive campaign against him is now underway in Prishtina,” Vučić said.
He argued that Serbia could benefit significantly from closer relations with Ukraine, stressing that Kyiv has never challenged Serbia’s territorial integrity.
“Just think about the impact. Zelensky comes here and says, ‘Yes, Kosovo is Serbia.’ Have Albanians suffered a bigger blow in the past 14 years?” Vučić said, in a triumphant tone.
His comments came in response to criticism from Serbian politicians who questioned the significance and political consequences of Zelensky’s visit to Belgrade.
Zelensky’s position on Kosovo has attracted particular attention in the region because Ukraine, despite its close political and military ties with Western countries and its opposition to Russia’s territorial claims, does not recognise Kosovo’s independence.
For Belgrade, the Ukrainian position represents an important diplomatic asset as Serbia continues to reject Kosovo’s independence and seeks to strengthen its negotiating position in the EU accession process.
The remarks also highlight the political importance Vučić attaches to Zelensky’s visit at a time when Serbia is balancing its relations with the European Union, Ukraine and Russia.
