Political analyst Dušan Spasojević did not hold back in condemning Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić for his recent phone call to Dijana Hrka, the grieving mother who lost her son in the Novi Sad canopy collapse. Speaking on “N1 Direktno,” Spasojević called the gesture a transparent attempt to manipulate public perception and pacify moderate SNS voters.
“Vučić’s government is notorious for its cold indifference to human suffering, yet even they recognize that a mother striking for justice in front of Parliament is a direct threat to their image. This is why Vučić staged his so-called emotional response,” Spasojević said.
The analyst described the president’s call as a cynical performance: “It is pure damage control. Vučić is not reaching out to help or address justice; he is trying to calm his voters while pretending to be humane. Every word, every gesture, is a calculated act to shield his regime from criticism.”
Spasojević also denounced the broader treatment of Hrka, calling it “humiliating” and emblematic of a government that thrives on intimidation, manipulation, and disregard for ordinary citizens. Even minor incidents—like firecrackers at the protest—are exploited to control the narrative and distract from the regime’s failures.
“This is not empathy. It is political theater aimed at the president’s base,” Spasojević said. “Vučić has weaponized tragedy for political gain. He addresses his voters first, not the grieving mother, not the public, and certainly not justice. This is the hallmark of a regime that values power over human life.”
The hunger strike, along with ongoing protests, exposes the regime’s desperation and moral bankruptcy. As Spasojević concludes, the only thing Vučić truly fears is the erosion of his carefully zombified electorate—yet even that fear is not enough to make him act with real accountability or humanity.
