Tens of thousands of Serbs gathered again today in Belgrade, at the invitation of students, to protest. The main slogan was “Vucic go” (Vucic, Leave).
The student revolt in Serbia, one of the largest in recent decades, began with the blockade of the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in the Serbian capital and later spread to more than 50 other faculties across the country.
On December 22nd, students received even more support. They were joined by farmers, healthcare workers, artists, and residents of Belgrade and surrounding cities.
The discontent of the students spread rapidly across Serbia and was also felt in many high schools, where graduating students boycotted classes until their demands were met.
Schools across Serbia will close for winter break one week earlier than originally planned this year, as the government of nationalist President Aleksandar Vucic seeks to suppress protests against corruption.
The students demand that those responsible for the accident at the Novi Sad railway station be held accountable and prosecuted, where a roof collapsed, killing 15 people. They also demand the full disclosure of all documents related to the reconstruction of the station. One of their other demands is the identification of the perpetrators of attacks against students and professors during previous protests in which they participated.
