Belgrade, August 21, 2025 – Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić held a “productive and substantive” telephone conversation with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on Thursday, focusing on enhancing bilateral relations between the two countries.

In an Instagram post, Vučić described Maduro as a “great friend” of Serbia and expressed gratitude for Venezuela’s support regarding Kosovo.

“Serbia highly values Venezuela’s principled and consistent support regarding the preservation of our territorial integrity and the non-recognition of the unilateral declaration of independence of Kosovo,” Vučić stated.

Serbian officials maintain close ties with Maduro, whose presidency is viewed by the European Union as lacking democratic legitimacy due to electoral irregularities.

During Maduro’s inauguration in January, Serbian Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabić attended the ceremony, a move that drew criticism from Brussels.

The Venezuelan government is currently under sanctions from the EU, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada, which were reinforced on January 10.

Vučić’s conversation with Maduro followed an earlier meeting with Russian Ambassador Aleksandar Bocan-Harčenko, where he announced a high-level summit between Serbian and Russian leaders “in the near future.”

Serbian authorities continue to refuse imposing sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, despite criticism from both Brussels and Washington.
