Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić stated on Tuesday that he would immediately begin consultations with political parties to discuss whether a new government will be formed within the next 30 days, as required by law, or if new elections will be called following the resignation of Miloš Vučević as prime minister.

“I am open to both options. We could have elections in 75 days, with April being the most likely month. There will be no interim government,” he said, adding that the main task of the authorities now is to maintain stability.

The Serbian president mentioned that it was very difficult for him to accept Vučević’s resignation.

“He did his job well,” Vučić said in a public address.

Miloš Vučević resigned earlier on Tuesday amid protests over the incident in Novi Sad last November, when a large concrete slab collapsed, killing 15 people.

The mayor of Novi Sad, Milan Đurić, also resigned.

For more than two months, thousands of students and other citizens in Serbia have been demanding criminal and political accountability for the tragedy in the Serbian city.

Even after Vučević’s resignation, student representatives in Serbia stated that their demands have not been met and have warned of new protests.
