Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has criticized the recent strikes carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran, arguing that the main objective of the actions is a change of regime in Tehran.
Commenting on the developments in the Middle East, Vučić drew a comparison with the bombing campaign conducted by NATO against Serbia in 1999. According to him, at that time the intervention was justified by claims of a humanitarian catastrophe, while the real goal, he said, was the overthrow of the government in Belgrade and the eventual independence of Kosovo.
“The whole thing is being carried out just like it happened in Serbia. They lied all the time that there was a humanitarian catastrophe, while the essence was two things – one was regime change in Belgrade in 1999 and 2000, and the second was the core of NATO’s actions: gaining independence for Kosovo, meaning separating 14 percent of Serbia’s territory and granting independence to that territory,” Vučić stated.
The Serbian president added that, in his view, the ongoing tensions in the Middle East could escalate further, as international actors push for political changes within Iran.
