In a recent post on social media regarding the ongoing student protests in Belgrade against President Aleksandar Vučić’s authoritarian system, former U.S. military officer, a decorated aviator and military expert Jeffrey H. Fisher has warned that the situation could escalate due to Vučić’s actions. Fisher, who has experience in both Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina, expressed concern over the President’s potential to intensify the conflict. He noted that while Vučić may feel cornered, he is unlikely to surrender easily.

Fisher’s statement comes after recent remarks by Vučić in Serbian media, where he suggested using “Cobras”—a reference to Serbian special police forces—against protesters. The colonel highlighted that Vučić has a history of diverting attention away from internal issues by igniting tensions in neighboring regions. Fisher emphasized the importance of vigilance in Kosovo, Bosnia, Montenegro, and Croatia, noting that the potential for further escalation in the Balkans is high.

The protests, initially started by thousands of students in Belgrade, have now attracted widespread support across the region, with many citizens from neighboring countries joining in solidarity. The growing unrest has raised alarms among international observers who fear it could lead to more significant instability in the region.

Fisher’s remarks serve as a reminder of the delicate political situation in the Balkans, where historical tensions continue to influence current events. His call for heightened vigilance underscores the potential risks of further regional destabilization.
