Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced in an interview with Blic TV that general elections will take place this year, with autumn being the more probable timing.
When asked whether he might resign as president to allow simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections, Vučić said the option is “possible,” adding that he is currently focused on other pressing issues.
Government Oversight and Public Accountability
Vučić explained his reasoning for attending a recent government thematic session, emphasizing his role as a leader with significant legitimacy and his duty to convey public concerns. He criticized ministers who, in his view, failed to respond adequately during severe weather conditions, highlighting that citizens expect officials to actively manage crises rather than travel abroad.
He described the efforts of workers restoring power after storms, praising their courage in difficult conditions: “These teams literally risked their lives climbing 15–20 meters on icy poles and under severe weather conditions to restore electricity. Citizens understand that accidents happen, but they expect leaders to be present and accountable.”
General Staff Case and Accountability
Vučić addressed the “General Staff” case, affirming that he does not shy away from responsibility: “I have absolute responsibility for the case and will wait for any indictment. I will not pardon myself, only others if needed.” He also defended his criticisms of certain civil servants, emphasizing his commitment to accountability and proper governance.
Other Remarks
Vučić shared lighter news, revealing that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban congratulated Serbia’s water polo team on their European Championship victory. He noted the celebrations across Belgrade and highlighted the camaraderie between the two leaders.
