Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has threatened protesters in Serbia with military intervention. He made this statement last night at a meeting of the Serbian Progressive Party, which he leads and is in power.
Vučić has continued to refer to the protests that have been ongoing in Serbia for some time as a “color revolution.”
“There are four days left until their attempt for a revolution and overthrowing the constitutional order, which is one of the most serious criminal offenses in Serbia,” said Vučić.
He even threatened protesters that if they overthrow the president, they would face the military and everything else.
“The main request after taking the institutions will be the formation of a kind of transitional government. They cannot overthrow the president because they know it will bring them into conflict with the military and everything else,” Vučić said.
Vučić stated that, “as long as I am alive,” he will not accept any transitional government, that “they will have to kill me,” and that this is his vow, adding, “I will not surrender the country to deceivers,” which was met with applause and cheers.
Since November 2024, Serbia has been rocked by massive protests against corruption, triggered by the collapse of a train station tent in Novi Sad, which killed 15 people. The protests began in Novi Sad and soon spread to Belgrade and other cities, gathering thousands of citizens demanding that authorities be held accountable for the accident and that corruption be fought.
Students have taken a leading role in organizing the protests, using digital communication channels for mobilization. By January 2025, the protests intensified, including blocking major roads in Belgrade and other cities. Despite the resignation of Prime Minister Miloš Vučević at the end of January, the protests continued, aiming for deeper political changes and combating corruption.
A large protest has been announced for March 15, 2025, in Belgrade, where a massive gathering of citizens from all over the country is expected to express dissatisfaction with the current political situation and demand changes.
